THE STORY OF THE MOAT FAMILY GREEN RAIN GARDEN
Mary Moat moved to Pound Ridge in 1949 to a house on Old Bouton Spur, where she lived until she passed away in April, 2016 at the age of 105. In Bonni Brodnick's book, Pound Ridge Past: Remembrances of Our Townsfolk, Mary was quoted as saying, "I've been on every committee there is to be on in this town. If you come here and love Pound Ridge, you should be willing to give something of yourself to make it a better place." Mary did just that. She was a member of the Pound Ridge Garden Club, a founding member of the Pound Ridge Historical Society, and a board member of the Pound Ridge Landmarks and Historic District Commission. The view from Mary's front door was of a triangular plot of land between Old Bouton Spur and Pound Ridge Road. That triangle was named the Moat Family Green to honor Mary for the active role she played in the Pound Ridge community.
Pound Ridge residents, including the people living on Old Bouton Spur, had expressed interest in doing something to improve the appearance of the triangle. Creating a rain garden was the idea of garden club member Joan Goldberg. The garden club approached the town board in 2014 and offered to create a rain garden in the triangle as a gift to the town of Pound Ridge. Mary was thrilled with the garden club's proposal and the project moved forward. It required the participation and cooperation of the Pound Ridge town board, highway department, maintenance department and the Water Control Commission to prepare the site before any planting could be done. Conceptual drawings were created by landscape architect Sid Burke. They broke ground in 2015 and the site was ready for planting in the Spring of 2016.
The Moat Family Green rain garden was officially opened at a dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony on September 13, 2016.
